MORPHOLOGY

To start with, let’s have a look at the term “Morphology”. It comes from Greek (morpho-> form, logos-> treaty, study of). Its literal meaning is “the study of forms”. The term was originally used in biology, and began to be used in Linguistics in the 19th century.

Morphology is the field within linguistics that studies the internal structure of words and the branch of linguistics that studies patterns of word-formation within and across languages, and attempts to formulate rules that model the knowledge of the speakers of those languages.

Although the term was coined in the 19th century1, the study of grammar began with the ancient Greeks, who started to describe language structure. This grammatical tradition was passed on to the Romans, who translated the Greek names for the parts of speech and grammatical endings into Latin (many of these terms are still used: nominative, accusative, dative…). Greeks and Romans studied languages, but they did not know anything about how they were related to each other.
